Rivers of Blood, a diptych. Dance is frequently used by artists to talk about the movement through life . I have tried to use it here to talk about the transition from boyhood to adulthood in almost a moment. A portrait of two people and the relationship between a mother and a son. As a parent, a mother you raise them up and show them the world, hoping to bring them the strength to face whatever is thrown at them , because life always has challenges and trials no matter what we hope for or how hard we try to protect our children.They become their own selves . Rivers of blood refers to the ties which bind us to our forefathers and descendants through time and life.

Pink is a controversial colour commonly associated with femininity soft and weak .Employed with opposing male dressing rooms to gain advantage.Tenderhearted, weak and watery. The dress shows a woman as a puppet with strings. It's about keeping up appearances, someone/the patriarchy dictating one's movements, and presenting a false image, but deep down wanting to be a 'real' person, not an act. The portrait above shows the real woman; this is her story, her dress, what she wears. It is based and influenced by a theater set and the story of Pinocchio including the blue fairy and Gepetto.

'Rise Up' was inspired by the song by Andra Day; it began from the bottom, about the oppression of women and mother and the recent overturning of Roe v Wade in the US, making abortions illegal in some states. That was my beginning point, about being stepped on and controlled. I thought of Dante's Inferno, and the rising up from a hellish place. The top figure was inspired by Leonora Carrington's painting 'The Giantess', I wanted her to be a strong figure with birds coming out from her soul into flight.

Buds and Flower Heads

The ‘arrangement’ of buds and flower heads came from those scraps that fall off a bunch (or two bunches in this case) of shop bought flowers. I particularly liked the vertical of the tall freesia stem and the line of buds curving right around the top of the commercial spice jar. I wanted to keep the background simple and geometric, but Picasso’s signature on the spine of the book was too much of a linear gift to ignore. Likewise, the bookmark, top left was a useful accident that needed to be used

In Manet’s preliminary study for his later and larger painting, “The Balcony”, he uses the same two female models: Berthe Morisot and the less famous, Jenny Claus, a violinist. In the study it is Jenny who takes centre stage but later it is Morisot who is seated and all important. Consequently, while attracted by the freedom of the study, I also wanted to pay tribute to prim overlooked Jenny. So with flowers and a new composition, dominated by verticals, horizontals and criss crossing diagonals, she plays again the main role.
